The Log Cabin At Milton High School

The Log Cabin At Milton High School Note: With the future of Milton High School in limbo, The Society urges all members to help preserve the Log Cabin. Please read this article, reprinted from our February 2003 newsletter, to see how you can help.

Why Milton High School Has A Log Cabin On Its Campus

Professor Pearce L. Elkins was awarded a $75.00 prize for his forestry presentation and proposed building a log cabin with the money. Built during the 1934-35 school year by the Future Farmers of America (FFA) students, the Cabin is the only remaining FFA-constructed log cabin still in use today in the United States.

A Community Project

Log Cabin BuildersThe cabin was a hands-on project that involved the entire community. Alpharetta merchants contributed needed supplies to help complete the project while the students cut and hauled donated pine trees to the cabin site. The foundation was laid using rocks provided by farmers and cement supplied by local merchants.

Builders of the Log Cabin, pictured here, are: Edwin Chester, George Jones, Glenn Wills, Tom Bell, Bill Rogers, and Kermit Sutton.

Construction Details

Log EndsHand-hewn notched log construction with cement chinking characterizes the one-room, one-floor cabin with a loft. Split log benches border all the walls. A massive rock fireplace with a stacked stone chimney is the focal point of the Cabin and is used for warmth as well as for cooking. The Cabin was originally an FFA clubhouse and also served as a central meeting place for the community for dances, meetings, weddings, and suppers.

Restoration

Log Cabin Interior - Click to enlargeRestoration of the Cabin was begun by the Milton High School history students in 1976. In 1985, the Alpharetta Historical Society leased the Cabin from the Fulton County Board of Education to continue preservation work. The Alpharetta Historical Society, City of Alpharetta, and Milton High School continue to work together to preserve the Log Cabin as a permanent museum. Visiting the Cabin provides an experience that reminds us of how our lives and times have changed. (Click image to view an enlarged photograph.)
